A New Generation of Functional Foods for Koi Over the last 10 years, koi foods have successfully provided the basic dietary requirements of koi through careful formulation and processing technology. Such diets have traditionally focussed on protein and energy content, and addressed vitamin and mineral inclusion rates. More recent research shows that food can be used effectively to further enhance koi health and vigour through the addition of a range of innovative ingredients. This has enabled Nishikoi to formulate two ‘new generation’ products: Niigata Professional Koi Food and Nishi-Clay. The Background The key objective of koi keepers across the world is to maintain a collection of healthy, growing and colourful koi. To date, this has been achieved through the management of water quality and nutritional requirements in large purpose-built koi ponds containing clear, filtered and recirculation water. However, koi keepers can be regularly confronted by a number of different koi health issues that arise through the interactions between koi physiology and variations in their environment. In fact, it is widely acknowledged by koi professionals that there are several common factors behind some of the problems experienced by koi that are kept in traditional koi ponds. • Koi exhibit their best health, vitality and colour when kept in the ideal environment of a ‘natural’ clay pond. • A typical filtered koi pond is a compromise between maintaining koi in the excellent conditions provided by a clay pond and the koi keeper’s need for clear water. • The health, vitality and colour of koi kept in a koi pond are likely to deteriorate from the superb condition they exhibit in a natural clay pond. Consequently, there is a real need to provide koi with the nutrition and water quality that will ‘close the gap’ between the compromised conditions koi may experience in a koi pond and the ideal environment of a natural clay pond. Recognising this problem, and the need to reduce the hazards of keeping koi in a koi pond by returning them to the superior conditions of a clay pond, the objectives for developing a new range of koi foods and pond products were clear. The Objectives To develop a range of products designed to duplicate the key beneficial factors that enhance the health, growth and colour of koi when grown in a ‘natural’ Japanese clay pond, and to make these available to koi keepers for the long-term benefit of their koi. The Research The development process naturally involved research in Niigata, Japan, the home of the world’s finest koi, seeking the opinions and experience of some of Japan’s leading professional koi farmers. In particular, research focussed on how koi keepers overseas could best maintain the superb health, growth and colour that is exhibited in the freshly harvested, high grade koi produced in Niigata, Japan. It soon became apparent that the areas of nutrition and water quality were the key environmental differences between a clay pond environment and that of a typical koi pond, being likely to cause a deterioration in the health and condition of koi. Furthermore, through additional related research, supplementary factors were highlighted as significant in the enhancement of koi health, vitality and colour. The results of the research and the recommendations of koi farmers from Niigata, Japan, have been incorporated into the appropriately named ‘Nishikoi Niigata’ range of koi foods and pond products. ‘Created with the koi breeders of Niigata’.
